Subject: A proposal for 3rd grade to participate in a Flat Stanley Project
We write this letter to propose a solution to a problem at our school. Our problem is that our students need a more authentic way to learn about other people in other cultures.
We have been teaching about various cultures and students have been learning about similarities and differences of different aspects such as food, jobs, and daily life. We also teach the students to show respect and tolerance for other cultures.
We propose that the 3rd grade participate in a Flat Stanley Project. The Flat Stanley Project connects people across the world and provides a means for learning through collaborating and communicating. This is done through a mutual friend, Flat Stanley. This gives students a starting point, an ice-breaker so-to-speak, with which to communicate. The objectives of the Flat Stanley project overlap with many of the following 3rd grade education standards:

- Compare ways that people adapt to the environment for food, clothing, and shelter.
- Use a graphic organizer or another note-taking technique to record important ideas or information.
- Describe the contributions of people who contributed to the common good of society.
- Explain personal connections to ideas or information in text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
